Twenty-five year-old embeddable database ported to ARM Linux

ITTIA has ported an embeddable, open source, C-language database to ARM Linux, and is inviting developers who write code for Linux on ARM to join a user support community it maintains. The ARM port of db.* targets routers, cell phones, cameras, and other resource-constrained devices. (more…)

O’Reilly updates Linux driver book

O'Reilly has published a third edition of Linux Device Drivers that covers changes in Linux 2.6 and adds coverage of console and USB drivers. The work discusses supporting peripherals and developing new hardware under Linux. (more…)

Hardware-assisted debugger supports Linux on PowerPC 4xx

Embedded Toolsmiths is shipping two hardware-assisted debuggers that support the PowerPC 4xx line of chips from AMCC (Applied Micro Circuits Corporation). The Guardian-SE JTAG ICE and Agile-DB Debugger provides on-chip debugging and run control, and supports AMCC's entire portfolio of PowerPC 4XX processors. (more…)

Linux 2.6 dev kits support Intel’s XScale-based IOPs

TimeSys is shipping Linux 2.6-based development kits for four storage-oriented Intel I/O processors (IOPs). TimeStorm Linux Development Kits (LDKs) are now available for Intel's IOP321, IOP331, IOP332, and 80219 XScale IOPs, which target storage, telmatics, security, print/imaging, iSCSI, control-plane processing, and CPE (customer premises equipment). Royalty-free 3D embedded graphics standard takes shape

The Khronos Group is inviting qualified developers to review the first draft specification of version 2.0 of the OpenGL ES (embedded subset). OpenGL ES is a royalty-free, open standard for advanced 2D and 3D graphics in embedded systems, including mobile and handheld devices. (more…)

Evaluation lab to promote embedded Linux in China

Freescale Semiconductor will co-found an evaluation lab in China chartered with helping commercialize embedded Linux in China. The MII-Freescale Linux Systems Lab, a joint effort with the China Software and Integrated Circuit Promotion (CSIP) Center, will develop systems for evaluating the performance and stability of pervasive computing applications. Kontron drives PCI Express bus to PISA

Kontron unveiled a board-level embedded computer form-factor leveraging PCI Express technology, at the Embedded World conference in Germany. Dubbed “PISA Express,” the approach combines PCI and PCI Express buses in a half-size “slot board” format modeled after the ISA/PCI-based “PISA” standard introduced by Kontron in 1996. (more…)

Embedded-specific security suite gains hardware acceleration

Mocana is shipping a version of its embedded security suite optimized for Freescale's newest PowerQUICC and ColdFire embedded processors. The company says its Embedded Security Suite offers a much smaller footprint than open source security software, along with higher performance, thanks to an asynchronous architecture that better supports hardware acceleration. Network device development kit includes Linux

American Arium and Jungo have jointly introduced a development kit for Linux-based network gateways, access points, DSL/cable modems, and IADs (Internet access devices). The LC-500MJ kit is based on Intel's IXDPG425 development board, and includes Jungo's OpenRG Linux firmware and American Arium's LC-500 hardware-assisted debugger. (more…)

Face-recognition security comes to mobile phones

A company in Japan has developed a technology for camera-equipped handheld devices that uses face recognition technology to authenticate users. Omron says its Okao Vision Face Recognition Sensor can increase the security of mobile devices such as camera phones and PDAs, and protect the data they contain. (more…)

Linux Wi-Fi stack aims to vastly widen wireless device deployments

WLAN software specialist Instant802 has renamed itself as Devicescape, and launched an off-the-shelf Linux Wi-Fi stack meant to speed the arrival of ubiquitous wireless networking. Universal Wireless Platform (UWP) 2.0 includes a Linux reference design and Eclipse-based tools, and targets consumer electronics devices, office equipment, and network infrastructure. (more…)
