Royalty-free 3D embedded graphics standard takes shape

The Khronos Group is inviting qualified developers to review the first draft specification of version 2.0 of the OpenGL ES (embedded subset). OpenGL ES is a royalty-free, open standard for advanced 2D and 3D graphics in embedded systems, including mobile and handheld devices.

According to the Khronos Group, version 2 of the OpenGL ES standard represents a parallel track to version 1 of the standard, with both tracks slated to evolve in parallel. The 1.x specification targets new-generation fixed-function 3D accelerators, while the 2.x specification will enable emerging programmable 3D pipelines, the organization says.

The Khronos Group, an industry consortium of digital media and graphics companies including SGI, ATI, Sun, and others, first announced OpenGL ES in September of 2002. It released the first specification in July of 2003, followed in March, 2004 by an Adopter's Package. A month later, the first comformant library implementation arrived.

More information, including an online application form and a table of contents of the 2.0 specification, are available online. Qualified developers and companies will receive the draft specification after executing a reviewers agreement, and will then be able to provide feedback and guidance to the OpenGL ES working group.
