Mini-ITX P4M motherboard soars to 1700MHz and beyond

Taiwanese industrial computer board supplier Commell has pushed the speed envelope for the compact Mini-ITX mini motherboard form-factor, with the release of its lastest Mini-ITX board that supports Intel's mobile Pentium 4 processors at clock rates in excess of 1700 MHz. (more…)

Java-powered home audio device frees music files from computers

Samsung debuts Linux-powered smartphone in China

Samsung has begun shipping a new Linux-powered smartphone in China. The Samsung SCH-i519 smartphone supports both Chinese and English, and works with the CDMA2000 1x network of China's #2 wireless provider, Unicom. (more…)

Intel Developer Forum to focus on converging technologies

Intel announced that its worldwide Spring 2004 Intel Developer Forum (IDF) conference circuit begins February 17-19 in San Francisco. According to Intel, the Spring IDF series focuses on “converging technologies” and, as always, showcases Intel's technology for implementers, developers, and business executives with the goal of helping enable development-related decisions. Device Profile: Samsung SCH-i519 smartphone

Samsung is shipping a high-end smartphone powered by embedded Linux from Mizi Research that supports both Chinese and English. The device is being distributed in China, initially, where it works with #2 China wireless provider Unicom's CDMA2000 1x network. This confirms an earlier rumor that Samsung would ship a Linux smartphone in 2003. (more…)

Kit supports H8S designs with small-footprint, Linux-like RTOS

Lineo Solutions Inc. (Japan) has released a hardware/software evaluation kit for Renesas Technology's H8S integrated microcontroller which includes a port of uBooster, Lineo's small footprint “Linux-like” real-time operating system (RTOS), running on an H8S-based reference board. (more…)

“Compatibility layer” migrates VxWorks apps to Linux-like RTOS

LynuxWorks today announced a VxWorks Compatibility Layer (VCL) package to help developers port VxWorks code to LynxOS, the company's Linux-like proprietary real-time operating system (RTOS). LynuxWorks says VCL enables legacy VxWorks code written for VxWorks's flat-memory model to be quickly ported to LynxOS, where it can run with memory protection and other benefits of a true multi-threaded,… (more…)

NEWS FLASH: China launches Linux-based smartphone

A Chinese company based in Shanghai named “E28” has quietly been selling Linux-based smartphones in China since August, and today launched its Linux device in Hong Kong. The company also claims to be in talks with US and European companies to bring the device to those regions, according to one source. (more…)

Programmable SOCs gain Linux RTOS, tools support

Citing heavy customer demand for embedded Linux, QuickLogic Corp. says it has partnered with TimeSys to offer ready-to-run Linux RTOS software development kits (SDKs) for its QuickMIPS family of programmable system-on-chip (SOC) processors. Embedded Linux distribution boots from USB thumb drive

Linux Mobile System (LMS) is an implementation of embedded Linux for USB “thumb” drives that can boot most any x86 computer into a Linux environment. Unlike so-called “live CDs,” LMS allows files to be stored and information exchanged between systems. An an optional boot floppy is also available, for systems' whose BIOS can't boot from a USB device. (more…)
