Worldwide handheld sales continue decline

Market analyst firm IDC reported today that the worldwide market for handheld devices continued to decline in the second quarter of 2003 “due to seasonality and sluggish demand from businesses and consumers alike.” According to IDC's quarterly handheld market report, Worldwide Handheld QView, worldwide handheld device shipments fell by 10.7% in Q2-03 over the same quarter a year ago, and dropped… (more…)

Sony unveils low power, high integration handheld processor

Sony Corporation announced the development of a new application processor which will serve as the heart of its upcoming “Clie” PDAs. The new processor, dubbed “Handheld Engine”, will initially be show up first in the Clie PEG-UX50, a new PalmOS-based handheld set debut in Japan next month (shown in the photo below). (more…)

3U CPCI SBC features 1.6 GHz Pentium M, supports Linux

Kontron announced a 3U CompactPCI single-board computer (SBC) based on an Intel 1.6 GHz Pentium M processor. Although the board performs comparably to one with a 2.4 GHz desktop-class Intel Pentium 4, it requires roughly 50 percent less power and can be cooled passively, the company said. (more…)

Mot unveils low-power PowerPC processor, embedded Linux support

Motorola announced a new low-power PowerPC processor aimed at a broad range of embedded applications including gateways, industrial controllers, automative telematics and GPS, instrumentation, and image processing. The MPC5200 is based on a 400MHz PowerPC 603e core (with Floating Point Unit) that performs at 760 MIPS (million instruction per second) while consuming less than 850 milliwatts of power,… (more…)

Samsung high-speed SOC for handhelds supports Linux

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. unveiled a new system-on-chip (SOC) processor for handheld devices today, calling it “the world's fastest mobile CPU.” The chip boasts a processor clock rate of 533MHz, and is aimed at enabling new services, functions, and multimedia capabilities for mobile handheld devices such as PDAs and smartphones, the company said.
