TimeSys boasts of embedded Linux design wins in networking devices
Jul 22, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsTimeSys Corp. announced several customers in networking, datacom, and broadband server applications, today. The company said its “carrier-grade embedded Linux real-time operating system (RTOS)” and associated development tools have been selected for new projects by Astrodesign, Memotec, Panasonic, Sanyo, and SeaChange International.
Memotec, a provider of multiservice gateways for transporting voice, video, data, and legacy protocols over IP, Frame-Relay, and ATM networks, said it selected TimeSys Linux based on its real-time networking performance. “[Their] enhanced fine grain timers as well as [their] unique CPU and Network Reservation mechanisms make it particularly well-suited for multi-service network applications, on par with dedicated proprietary real-time OSs,” commented Memotec's technology and marketing executive director, DiPaolo. Additionally, quality of service (QoS) features within TimeSys Linux allowed Memotec to guarantee the quality of voice and video services against other data traffic, DiPaolo said.
Other networking system applications requiring carrier-grade features provided by TimeSys Linux have included Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet controllers, connected handheld communication devices, and video on demand (VOD) and digital broadcast stream analyzers for the broadband cable industries, TimeSys said. TimeSys CEO Larry Weidman noted that some of the key features of TimeSys Linux that were responsible for being selected for these applications were “broad support of networking protocols and carrier-grade Linux features, true RTOS performance, and 'ready-to-run delivery' on their target hardware.”
