Sun targets Microsoft’s .NET with free software [Reuters]

Reuters is reporting that Sun is 'setting the non-Microsoft standard' in 'Web services.' This move by Sun to embrace open standards, and Linux in particular, is yet another indication of a battle brewing between the two companies. For its part, Microsoft is phasing out Sun's Java in products in favor of home-grown .NET services. (more…)

Embedded Linux powers new thin-client terminal

MontaVista Software, Inc. today announced that two Japanese firms, Nexterm Inc. and ELT Inc., have jointly developed “an advanced thin-client terminal” based on MontaVista Linux. The Nexterm SE is described as “a highly efficient and lightweight micro-client that executes all terminal applications in a server-based computing environment.” (more…)

GDB gains support for remote debugging of multithreaded programs

As Linux becomes more popular with embedded system developers, it's becoming increasingly important for gdb to be able to do remote debugging of multithreaded programs in an embedded Linux target. As of gdb 5.2, gdb's “gdbserver” remote probe did not support this. (more…)

VDC report shows embedded Java market growing 34% annually
