A new open source programmable logic controller (PLC) project, the Puffin Project, has been started by a group of developers led by Curt Wuollet. The group, which formulated their initial plans on a controls community website, Control.com, is now hosted by that company on a separate site, PuffinPLC.org. (more…)

Axis Communications (in Sweden) has announced the Journaling Flash File System (“JFFS”), aimed at providing a crash/powerdown-safe filesystem for diskless embedded devices. JFFS is released under the GPL. The current version works with the Linux 2.0 kernel and supports industry standard memory mapped NOR Flash memory devices. (more…)

ZDNet's news editor Mary Jo Foley has written an interesting and informative piece about the impact of a growing number of “embedded web browsers”. While these browsers have appeared primarily to serve the needs of a few very specific applications, such as cell phones and PDAs, the trend is a good one and bodes well for the emerging market of embedded Linux applicances and devices of all types.
