A new open source programmable logic controller (PLC) project, the Puffin Project, has been started by a group of developers led by Curt Wuollet. The group, which formulated their initial plans on a controls community website, Control.com, is now hosted by that company on a separate site, PuffinPLC.org. The project seeks to create a fully open source software implementation of a programmable logic controller (PLC), with the initial target platforms being Linux and its realtime variants.

Accomplishments to date include the establishment of a CVS and active mail list on the PuffinPLC.org site, progress on architectural and interface design, and the contribution of some existing communication driver code. Controls community startup Control.com Inc. has pledged to support the project with development staff, and intends to supply paid support services once a released version is available.
