Feb 29, 2000 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 23 views

Centura Software Corp. today went live with its first open source data management solution for information appliances, db.linux. Centura's db.linux is available for downloading and for collaborative development on OpenAvenue's hosting site at www.openavenue.com/db.linux.

OpenAvenue, an Open-Source Service Provider (OSPTM) specializing in the hosting, management and distribution of worldwide collaborative software development projects, will manage Centura's open source initiative and grow the developer community for db.linux. Centura brings over 15 years of engineering expertise in the embedded data management space to this strategic relationship. Together with OpenAvenue, Centura will ensure the stability, growth and vitality of db.linux as the premier embedded database of choice for the Information Appliance market.

“We applaud db.linux, Centura's groundbreaking open source initiative,” said Bill Guilmart, OpenAvenue's executive vice president of Global Collaboration. “By opening this exciting project to the community for ongoing development, Centura is helping to enable the OpenIndustry, a rapidly growing community of developers, owners and users of publicly developed software. We believe this strategy will attract developers at Global 2000 companies as well as small business developers who have been eagerly awaiting an open source database for Information Appliances.”

This newly created open source initiative will lead to significant growth opportunities for Centura through services, support, training and upgrades. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of db.linux will leverage other Centura solutions, including its patent-pending SQLBase Safegarde security solution; Velocis, its powerful e-business data management server; and eSNAPP, its ground-breaking appliance connectivity solution, creating a complete IA embedded systems offering.

About db.linux

db.linux, the first open source embeddable database solution for IA data management, is a fast, flexible and lightweight database. It is scalable, extensible and optimized for performance that is proven in a wide variety of applications, including telecom, network/systems management, financial, document management and real-time and embedded systems.

The exceptional performance of db.linux stems from its unique features, including complete database control and low-level access provided by over 150 functions in the C-API library. By combining the strengths of two proven database models — relational model and pointer-based, navigational network model — db.linux allows developers to design and build high-performance embedded database applications using C or C++ application development tools.

Centura's award-winning data management solutions have been deployed by a number of customers, including: HP, Sattel Technologies, Nortel, 3COM, CamDATA, ETS and Wuerth AG.
