A new single board computer (SBC) company plans to form around a chewing gum-sized SBC running embedded Linux currently being prepared for market. “Gumstix” plans to launch as a company within two to three weeks, according to sources close to the Gumtix project. Its first board will target wearable, smartphone, and PDA applications.

The first Gumstix product measures 0.79 by 3.1 inches (20 x 80 mm). It is based on an an Intel XScale PXA255 processor, the same used in Samsung Linux phones, Sharp Zaurus PDAs, and some robot designs.

The Gumstix board includes 4MB of Flash RAM, and 64MB of SDRAM. Expansion interfaces include MMC, SD, and SDIO. The board draws under 200mA, according to Gumstix, and can be powered by 3 AAA NiMH batteries.

According to sources, form factor was a big issue, early on, for the project. “We considered going square, but thought the gumstick form factor made more sense for wearable computing, smartphone, and PDA applications.”
