Convergent media device based on embedded Linux readied for US market
Sep 24, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsTaiwanese electronic device manufacturer Lung Hwa is demonstratrating a Linux-based convergent media device at its booth at Computex Taipei expected to hit US shelves in Q4, 2003, priced near $400.
The device is a convergent media player that Lung Hwa built for Video Without Boundaries (VWB), the company that earlier formed a joint venture with CAC Media to license MediaReady 4000 technology to OEMs and manufacturers. VWB and CAC Media have initially licensed the Lafayette brandname and will market the device under that name in the U.S.
The MediaReady 4000 design runs the MediaReady Convergent Software Suite from embedded Linux specialist CAC Media, which recently made news by joining the Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF).
“The open architecture of the MediaReady 4000 makes it a highly attractive private-label opportunity,” said Peter Pai, Chairman and CEO of Lung Hwa Electronics. “Marketers and retailers can customize and configure the MediaReady 4000 to fit specific market niches or regional sales opportunities. Its Linux platform and USB 2.0 connection also means the MediaReady 4000 can accommodate many types of consumer electronics aftermarket software and hardware.”
