Home media server to demo on Intel Atom platform
May 22, 2009 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 25 views[Updated: 12PM] — At Computex, Intel and Amahi plan to demonstrate an embedded version of the latter's Amahi Linux Home Server software designed for Intel Atom N270 processors. The open source Home Digital Assistant (HDA) will provide media sharing and backup on integrated media servers and home routers, says Amahi.
Specific features to be shown June 2-6 at the Computex show in Taiwan are said to include:
- Local HDA demo plus VPN (virtual private network) access to a remote HDA system in California
- Demo platforms using Intel's Atom N270 CPU and N945GSE chipset
- Basic platform functionality for user and share creation, and networking control
- One-click installation of applications including media management, media serving, photo galleries, and video surveillance apps
- Cross platform support for Linux, Windows, and Apple client machines

The Amahi Linux Home Server, upon which HDA is based, is Fedora Linux-based software that can be installed via DVD onto x86-based desktops with 800MHz and 512MB of RAM, turning them into media and backup servers, says Amahi. Core features for the Amahi Linux Home Server are said to include:
- Backup and restore all networked PCs
- Access, share, and search files, including photos, music and videos, from any networked PC
- Set up VPN for secure remote access
- Share applications like calendaring and private wikis across home network
The open source Amahi community invites members to write native apps using Ruby on Rails (RoR), which is Amahi's preferred development environment, or else use PSP, Python, and Perl. The company offers access to an online app store, which is said to be free the first year and then $20 a year following that.
