BOScom has launched a high-end thin client capable of running OpenOffice and Java applications locally. The Bosanova LTC 1000 has a fanless VIA embedded processor clocked at 1GHz, legacy and modern ports, and PCMCIA, PCI, and SmartCard expansion slots.

The LTC 1000 includes a Windows-like interface, according to Bosanova, but unlike Windows-based thin clients others offers a full local Java Virtual Machine, scalable windows, and support for remote X applications. It also offers faster screen refreshes than Bosanova's Windows based client.

Hardware side

The LTC 1000 is based on a fanless 1GHz Eden processor. It boots a linux 2.4.7-10 kernel from 64MB of Flash ROM and includes 128MB of DDR system RAM. It is available with an optional 122-key keyboard (pictured at right) that includes extra shortcut and function keys intended for use with OpenOffice.

The LTC 1000 includes a high-powered AGP 8X graphics subsystem capable of supporting UXGA (1200 x 1600) resolutions at a color depth of 32 bits with 2D/3D acceleration. The system includes a standard VGA port and a DVI port for connection to flat-panel displays. The system also offers 16-bit, 44kHz audio, with 1/8-inch mini-plugs. It uses a 40w external power supply.

A PCMCIA port offers wireless 802.11 expansion via optional Cisco Aeronet 352 or Belkin F506020 802.11b cards. The device also includes a 10/100 Ethernet RJ-45 port, legacy PS/2, serial, and parallel printer ports as well as 4 USB ports, PCI expansion slot, and a smart-card reader.

Software side

The LTC 1000 emulates a wide range of terminals, including TN5250e, TN3270e with GUI, hot spots, telnet with SSH, VT100, Wyse 60 VT 220, and xterm. Embedded local applications include Mozilla v1.6 (or Firefox 0.92) with Sun JVM, Pop 3 email (Compatible with Lotus Notes v6.5+), Macromedia Flash, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and X11R6. Optional local software includes OpenOffice and Java Cache.

The LTC 1000 supports client networking protocols including RDP v5.2, ICA v8, Citrix Web Client, and Tarantella. It can connect with a wide range of servers, including Linux/Unix, Windows 2003, 2000, Server, NT4.0 Terminal Server, Citrix Metaframe, and Tarantella Canaveral iQ and Enterprise 3. It can be centrally managed using the BOS Remote Manager, and supports WOL (wake on LAN).

“One major benefit of this new series is the performance boost to users who take advantage of the OpenOffice suite. Any Java-based products will also benefit,” said BOScom president Martin Pladgeman.
