Wyse introduced a mobile thin client using AMD's dual-core G-Series T56N processor, with integral Radeon HD6310 graphics, and soon to be available with SUSE Linux. The X90m7 offers a 14-inch display with 1366 x 768 pixels, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking, 2GB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage, plus a “2G/4G capable” ExpressCard slot and optional smart card reader, the company says.

Wyse's X90m7 mobile thin client is like earlier models (such as the 11.6-inch, Intel Atom-powered X90CW) in being essentially a notebook computer sans hard drive. This provides "a vital benefit for mobile workers who regularly work with sensitive data in unsecure environments," according to the company.

The X90m7 (right) comes with the Windows Embedded Standard 7 operating system, whose advantages are said to include Microsoft's RDP (remote desktop protocol) 7.1, with RemoteFX technology offering "high-fidelity graphics and audio." It's also available as the X90mw, with Windows Embedded Standard 2009, and a version equipped with SUSE Linux Enterprise is said to be planned (but wasn't named).

Like the stationary Z90 announced by Wyse in January, the X90m7 employs one of AMD's embedded-specific G-series processors, the dual-core T56N. According to AMD, this CPU has a 1.6GHz clock speed plus an 18-Watt TDP, and includes Radeon HD6310 graphics — providing DirectX 11, support for OpenCL 1.1, OpenGL 3.2 and 2.1, plus dedicated hardware for HD video (H.264, VC-1, and MPEG2 decoding).

The mobile X90m7 is like the Z90 in that it includes dual video outputs (here, DisplayPort and VGA rather than the Z90's DVI-I/DisplayPort combo). And, it again sports two USB 3.0 ports, said to operate up to ten times faster than USB 2.0.

Other interfaces, as pictured above, include gigabit Ethernet, a USB 2.0 port, a microphone input, and a headphone output. The X90m7, which has a 1.3 megapixel webcam, can also be fitted with an optional smart card reader, according to Wyse.

Internally, the X90m7 has an ExpressCard slot that may be used to install an optional 3G/4G cellular modem, supplementing the device's native 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking capabilities, Wyse says. The portable comes standard with 2GB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage, but may be expanded up to 4GB of RAM and 32GB flash, the company adds.

Wyse says the X90m7 has a six-cell, 5,200mAh battery, but doesn't specify how many hours of cordless operation this provides. (We'd expect it to hold out for five or six hours, given both our experience with AMD G-Series CPUs and the fact that the X90m7 lacks a rotating drive.)

According to Wyse, the X90m7 is "optimized for" the latest 4.8.5 version of its Wyse Device Manager software, "the most sophisticated enterprise-class management tool for cloud clients." Benefits are said to include greater security, with encrypted communications between client and managing server, improved flexibility, and the ability for all Wyse devices to be managed from a single software solution.
