San Francisco, CA — (press release) — DeviceForge LLC today announced that it will acquire the LinuxDevices.com “Embedded Linux Portal” website from CNET Networks, Inc. The two companies have also formed a strategic relationship through which they will continue to share content and provide links to each others' sites. Terms were not disclosed.

LinuxDevices.com, originally acquired by ZDNet (which is now part of CNET Networks) serves a niche audience of individuals and companies who develop for embedded Linux systems. CNET Networks has decided to focus its newly redesigned ZDNet Linux Update site on Open Source content for its core audience of corporate IT and business decision makers.

“CNET Networks' increased focus on providing Linux-oriented content for IT and business decision makers signaled a shift away from the LinuxDevices content and core audience,” said Rick Lehrbaum, former executive editor at CNET Networks and founder of LinuxDevices and DeviceForge. “We decided mutually that LinuxDevices would be in a better position for growth with separate ownership. We will still benefit from links into each other's content as appropriate to serve the needs of our respective audiences.”

LinuxDevices.com is a top resource for companies and individuals developing smart devices and embedded systems based on Linux and other open source software. The site features news, analysis, whitepapers, product and company listings, discussion forum, and job listings. Typical applications for embedded Linux range from consumer appliances such as set-top boxes, entertainment systems, and handheld computers to industrial applications like robotics and factory automation.
