eCos gains commercial embedded GUI support
Jan 7, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewseCosCentric has added support for Swell Software's portable, small-footprint C-language GUI to its commercially supported development toolkit for eCos, an open source RTOS (real-time OS) for deeply embedded systems. The new eCosPro-C/PEG toolkit can produce runtimes as small as 140KB, targeting mobile phones, MP3 players, industrial controllers, and instrumentation devices.
According to eCosCentric, C/PEG is a portable, feature rich, small footprint GUI widely adopted within the embedded space. It says the GUI an ideal match for eCos, and has previously been used in successful commercial products, such as Iomega's “HipZip” MP3 player, pictured at right.
The eCosPro-C/PEG development kit includes Eclipse-based cross-platform development tools that support remote application development and debugging on Windows and Linux hosts. It also includes “the full complement” of utilities from Swell's GUI toolkit, eCosCentric says, enabling developers to generate custom C/PEG windows, dialogs, bitmaps, and proprietary fonts, and integrate them with the eCosPro run-time.
eCosCentric Chairman Paul Beskeen said, “C/PEG's minimal target footprint makes it an ideal graphical solution for [the] eCos RTOS in cost-competitive embedded designs.
Swell Software VP and C/PEG developer Jim Delisle said, “We believe the integration of C/PEG with eCosPro gives a broad spectrum of embedded systems developers the ideal platform for bringing captivating new products to the consumer, industrial and medical markets.”
Additionally, eCosCentric will offer C/PEG driver development and optimization services, and ports of eCosPro-C/PEG to several off-the-shelf development boards.
