ActiveState Software has achieved a major new release of its graphical IDE (integrated development environment) for dynamic web applications. Komodo IDE 5.0 adds support for git, mercurial (hg), and bazaar version control systems, along with language-specific code beautification hooks.

Komodo supports Linux, Mac, and Windows hosts. It includes a graphical debugger, along with a built-in rendering engine for code testing. The engine is based on Mozilla 1.9, which also underpins Firefox 3.0, according to the company. Featured language support includes Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Tcl, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, XML, RHTML, Template-Toolkit, HTML-Smarty, and Django.

Touted additions and improvements in version 5.0 include:

• New support for Git, Mercurial (hg), and Bazaar distributed version control systems (in addition to the already supported Subversion, Perforce, and CVS)
• “Smart” cross-SCC system checkout wizards aim to simplify working on repositories shared by small groups
• Improved code formatting, with built-in tools and hooks for PHP Beautifier, Perltidy, astyle, and so on
• Python 2.6, for added speed
• Multiple top-level windows and cleaner user interfaces for tabs and sidebars

The previous Komodo IDE 4.0 release two years ago mainly added “Web 2.0” features, such as asynchronous Javascript and XML (AJAX), an increasingly popular technology in device interfaces since it has the potential to reduce polling in remote sensing and other embedded applications. AJAX also offloads some processing from low-powered devices to the client interface.

Availability

Komodo IDE 5.0 is available now, priced at the temporarily reduced rate of $1,000 for five seats. It can be purchased online, here. Also available are ActivePerl and ActiveTCL Pro Studio versions, priced at $2,000 for five seats. A trial download (44MB) is also available.
