eCosCentric supports eCos copyright unification initiative
Jan 14, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewseCosCentric says that it, too, will assign its eCos-related copyrights to the Free Software Foundation (FSF), following yesterday's announcement that Red Hat would do likewise. eCosCentric believes that copyright unification under the FSF will benefit the entire eCos developer community and increase eCos's share of the… embedded market.
According to eCosCentric, development and maintenance of eCos has, since Spring 2002, primarily taken place outside of Red Hat, which acquired eCos when it merged with Cygnus in November, 1999. A single, vendor-neutral copyright owner will simplify and enhance the legal protection of eCos's open source license, and hasten turn-around of copyright assignments for new contributions, eCosCentric maintains.
eCosCentric believes that copyright unification will increase the popularity of eCos and associated RedBoot firmware. CMP's Embedded Market Study from November, 2002, placed current eCos RTOS usage within the embedded market at 5%, with a further 19.8% of respondents considering the use of eCos within the next 12 months.
“I am delighted that Red Hat has listened to the community and their wish to consolidate the copyrights under the auspices of the FSF,” commented Jonathan Larmour, Lead Maintainer and Chief Engineer at eCosCentric.
