Talk abstract: Today's embedded and real-time systems are doubly challenged: they must satisfy traditional real-time and size constraints; but they also must provide sophisticated capabilities like networking, graphical user interfaces, and high density mass storage. RTLinux provides a novel approach to reconciling these seemingly contradictory demands. RTLinux is a small,fast, predictable open-source real-time operating system (RTOS) that runs Linux as a low priority thread. This talk explains the technology and programming methodology that makes this possible, and contrasts these techniques with conventional approaches like VxWorks and “real-time” UNIXes.

Speaker bio: Dr. Victor Yodaiken is President of FSMLabs, a software development company headquartered in New Mexico and with developers in the US and Europe. Dr. Yodaiken is the creator of RTLinux. He has been working on operating systems in both industry and academia since the early 1980s when he was one of the developers of one of the first commercial distributed fault tolerant UNIX systems.
