Sunnyvale, CA and Tokyo, Japan — (press release excerpt) — MontaVista Software, Inc. today announced an alliance with ACCESS, Co., Ltd., provider of embedded browsers, to pursue joint development and marketing activities. Together, the two companies enable embedded developers to build on the combined best-in-class embedded Linux platform and web client. The alliance anticipates development of new business for both companies, and also supports several customer projects already underway.

As part of the alliance, ACCESS will standardize on and promote MontaVista Hard Hat Linux as their embedded Linux platform; for its part, MontaVista will reference and leverage the ACCESS NetFront browser as part of its vertical offering for edge devices.

ACCESS offers the NetFront 2.6 Linux Software Development Kit (SDK) to speed integration of the NetFront browser into Linux-based Internet appliances and other non-desktop applications. The ACCESS embedded browser NetFront and Compact NetFront, which is the micro browser based on CompactHTML standard, garner an overwhelming share of the Japanese market. More than 18 million commercial software licenses have been shipped for use in more than 94 different consumer information appliances.
