Embedded computer maker Kontron swallows up Dolch
Mar 8, 2005 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsKontron AG has announced its acquisition of Dolch Computer Systems Inc. for an undisclosed amount of cash from Siegel-Robert Inc. The leading provider of ruggedized portable computers for the past 27 years, Dolch will now assume the Kontron name and operate as a business unit of Kontron America Inc.
Kontron is a leading provider of embedded computers, with positions in standalone single-board computers (SBCs), industrial motherboards, CompactPCI, and ATCA, and it was one of the developers of the new PISA Express computer-on-module specification now being championed by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG).
The company has been on the acquisition trail for a number of years now. PEP Modular Computers, Teknor Microsystems, JUMPtec, and Adastra have all been incorporated into the Kontron fold within recent memory. The Dolch acquisition will clearly enhance the company's own portable offerings. As Thomas Sparrvik, President and CEO of Kontron America, pointed out, Dolch holds the dominant position in portables for “gas and oil, test and measurement, and military market spaces.”
