The Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) announced speakers for its annual conference, set for Apr. 15-17 in Mountain View, Calif. Keynote speakers for Embedded Linux Conference 2008 include Linux luminaries Tim Bird and Andrew Morton (pictured at left), as well as LinuxDevices.com's own Henry Kingman.

The three-day Embedded Linux Conference 2008 is open to the public and will offer two keynotes, 54 sessions, and six BOFs (birds of a feather) sessions, says CELF. Sessions will be presented by developers from companies including Sony, Samsung, Hitachi, LG, Toshiba, NEC, IBM, Philips, Intel, Freescale, MontaVista, TimeSys, Lineo Solutions, and Embedded Alley.

The keynote speakers will be as follows:

  • Tuesday — Henry Kingman, executive editor for LinuxDevices.com, will kick off the event by sharing some insights from a decade spent writing about Linux, including five for LinuxDevices.com. Kingman plans to discuss where Linux was in devices 10 years ago, where it is today, and where it may show up in the future. He may also share results from our annual reader survey, so “please vote, if you haven't already,” he said.
  • Wednesday — Andrew Morton, lead maintainer of the Linux development kernel, will summarize the kernel.org development and decision-making processes. He will also discuss the economics of using a modern kernel versus staying with a frozen older version, and of maintaining private patchsets versus merging work back into the public kernel.
  • Thursday — Tim Bird, Architecture Group chair for CELF, will give an overview of the status of various Linux technologies relevant to embedded devices and highlight key kernel features and middleware projects. He will also summarize CELF's technical working groups and projects, and discuss its plans for the upcoming year.

The conference's sessions, tutorials, and BOF sessions includes topics such as:

  • Power management
  • Tools and debugging techniques
  • Embedded distributions
  • Linux in mobile devices (including an Android demo)
  • System size
  • Flash filesystems
  • Graphics and video
  • Real-time performance
  • Security
  • Bootup time
