Embedded Linux ‘ignites’ microprocessor
Jul 19, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsPTSC (Patriot Scientific Corp.) announced that in response to developer's requests, the IGNITE microprocessor will be made available with a RTOS (Real Time Operating System) version of Linux. Patriot will add uClinux with Lineo's 'real-time patch'.
According to spokesperson, Margret Combs, “Within the last three months alone we had had a half dozen potential customers ask us if Linux was available on the IGNITE as the Operating System. Wanting to respond to the market, we felt this was a wise move to provide customers with the option of two Operating Systems.”
The IGNITE processors and Intellectual Property (IP core) are presently, and will continue to be, available with VxWorks. With the addition of Linux, product developers will have the option of selecting either Operating System with the IGNITE technology.
“The IGNITE, with its highly efficient architecture, is increasingly becoming the embedded processor being considered for applications that require the servicing and coordination of complex tasks between various functional entities comprised of hardware and software components,” explained PTSC's V.P. of Engineering, Joey Maitra. “Many development engineers prefer Linux as it is royalty free and they have access to the source code. This allows them to tailor the Operating System to address their precise needs,” Maitra continued.
IGNITE with Linux will be available by mid-September.
