Embedded Linux supports multimedia-oriented Katana system-on-chip

Lineo uSolutions announced plans to develop and sell embedded Linux support for the evaluations boards of MediaQ, a chipmaker specializing in multimedia processors for handheld devices. Additionally, the companies said they will collaborate on various sales and marketing activities.

According to Lineo, the initial product resulting from the relationship is an embedded Linux board support package (BSP) for MediaQ's Katana system-on-chip processor. The MQ9000-Katana BSP will be added to Lineo's uLinux ELITE toolkit, an embedded Linux cross development environment to be released later this month, the company said.

Earlier this year, MediaQ unveiled its Katana family of ARM-based system-on-chip processors for next-generation multimedia-oriented handheld devices such as PDAs and mobile phones. According to MediaQ, the new Katana “application processors” simultaneously reduce power consumption while boosting performance, as a result of the inclusion of dedicated on-chip hardware accelerators for 2D and 3D graphics, native Java byte-code execution, JPEG encode, and digital camera support.

Lineo said it will demonstrate ELITE and the MQ9000-Katana BSP at the Embedded Systems Expo & Conference in Tokyo later this month.
