Enhanced VoIP processing software runs on Linux
May 18, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsCroatia-based Uniqall has added more efficient codec utilization and a better web interface to its flagship “host media processing” (HMP) software for VoIP (voice over IP) applications. “Gridborg HMP Server” eliminates the need for traditional DSP (digital signal processor) telephony boards, simplifying VoIP products and services, the company claims.
Uniqall said Gridborg makes it possible for “every company with an Internet connection to develop and provide voice-accessed products and services.” The software supports a dizzying array of ITU and other telephony standards, along with eight codecs.
Media processing capabilities reportedly include mixing, file playback and recording, RTP (real-time protocol) streaming, VAD (voice activity detection), and dial-tone/signal generation. Also included are sophisticated call control, conferencing, and faxing features. APIs (application programming interfaces) include Envox, as well as the company's own “Gridborg Control Protocol.”

The top new feature in Gridbord Server 1.3 is “optimized media processing,” described as a way to reduce how often signals and/or files are compressed or decompressed. For example, voice prompts can be pre-cached in multiple compression formats, sparing processor cycles otherwise needed for on-the-fly transcoding. One touted benefit of this, along with reduced CPU utilization, is the potential to reduce costs associated with licensing proprietary audio codecs like G.729 and G.723.1.
Other new features in Gridborg 1.3 include an improved web interface, STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP over NATs) support, sound device resource on all platforms, stereo support, in-band tone generation, and RTP statistics. Also new is a licensing scheme with a free 45-day evaluation option.
Borko Jandras, lead developer, stated, “Cutting [the number of] hosts needed to handle large call volumes is a great opportunity for our customers, and we have received great feedback from them. Handling large call volumes puts stress on data centers and every optimization we can bring saves energy and space.”
Availability
Gridborg HMP Server 1.3 is available now for Linux and Windows operating systems. Further details can be found on the company's freshly updated website.
