A developer of open source VoIP recording software is readying an embedded VoIP recording appliance. The OrecX VoIP Recording Appliance combines OrecX's Oreka TR Total Recorder application with a 1U, Linux-based, rack-mounted server aimed at the small-to-medium business (SMB) call-handling market, says the company.

Chicago based OrecX is the sponsor of the Oreka open source call recording project, hosted on Sourceforge.net. More than 37,000 users have downloaded the open source version of Oreka, says the company. The company sells a variety of Linux-ready packaged applications based on Oreka, including the “enterprise-strength” Oreka TR Total Recorder, which is loaded onto its new appliance.

The VoIP Recording Appliance is targeted at contact centers, legal offices, sales/transaction personnel, public safety agencies, and other SMB call-handling applications, says OrecX. The device offers live monitoring, record-on-demand, and rule-based selective and sampled recording. It can record up to 200 simultaneous VoIP sessions, claims the company.

The embedded Oreka TR software is said to enable users to search, find, and categorize recordings based on criteria including time and date of call, as well as incoming or outgoing phone number. Call functions are said to be accessible via Web browsers, including Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

OrecX would not reveal details on the hardware, which the company said was provided by a third party. It did state, however, that the device can monitor up to four gigabit Ethernet ports. The appliance ships with G.711, G729A, G.723.1, iLBC, and GSM6.10 codecs, and is said to support SIP, Cisco Skinny, H.323, MGCP, IAX2, and RTP protocols.

Stated Bruce Kaskey, COO of OrecX, “No significant technical knowledge is required with the OrecX VoIP Recording Appliance — just plug it in and it works.”

Availability

The OrecX VoIP Recording Appliance, including rack-mount server and pre-installed Oreka TR Total Recorder software, is priced under $3,500 for twelve channel licenses. (Customers can order custom versions with more channels, says the company.) OrecX is taking orders now for the appliance, which should ship in three weeks, says OrecX.

The appliance is being demonstrated at OrecX's Booth D-06 at the ITExpo East show, being held at the Miami Beach Convention Center this week, Feb. 2-4. More information on the Oreka TR Total Recorder should be here.
