Epson embeds QNX in new retail interactive terminal
Jun 26, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsOttawa, ON — (press release excerpt) — QNX Software Systems announced today that Epson America has selected the QNX real-time operating system to be embedded within a new intranet-based customer marketing system. The Epson Zeleon is an interactive terminal based on thin-client architecture and network-centric management. The device is intended to give retailers and hospitality providers lots of flexibility in reaching and engaging consumers while they are shopping.
The Zeleon is based on National Semiconductor's Geode processor, has an SVGA resolution display, and provides interfaces to 100BaseT Ethernet, USB, and PCMCIA — all packaged in a compact, (310mm x 310mm x 64.5mm) ruggedly designed package. The device supports Epson's QUASS (quick and scalable stream) multimedia standard, which makes it well suited for high-quality video promotions with streaming video, animation, and CD-quality sound. It can also be used for point-of-sale purchases when equipped with optional bar-code and magnetic-card readers.
