First open Desktop Linux conference Nov. 10, in Boston

The non-profit Desktop Linux Consortium (DLC) will hold its first Desktop Linux conference in Boston on Nov. 10, 2003 to discuss and promote Linux as an option for the corporate desktop. The conference claims to be the first independent conference to focus exclusively on Linux on the desktop.

DLC Executive Director Bruce Perens says, “Enterprise users are focusing on Linux as their standard operating system. The Desktop Linux Conference is where you'll learn about the Linux desktop: how surprisingly capable it already is, and where it's going."

Topics will include: Linux technologies, security, government adoption, and emerging trends.

Featured speakers will include:

  • IBM's Samuel J. Docknevich, Linux and Grid Services Executive for IBM Global Services Americas discusses IBM's desktop Linux strategy in his presentation, "The time is now for Linux on the desktop."
  • Red Hat's Brian Steves, VP OS Development, offers a preview of the the company's roadmap and talks about Linux's surge into the enterprise.
  • Sam Hiser of OpenOffice.org discusses the impact that the open-source office suite and more applications have on the increasing number of Linux desktops emerging throughout the world.
  • Sado Shuji and Tomonari Ikeda of VA Linux Systems Japan reveals the current state of desktop Linux in Asia.
  • John Weathersby of the Open Source Standards Institute (OSSI) discusses new military initiatives that use Linux.
  • Dr. Martin Echt, CEO and Cardiologist of Cardiology Associates (CCA) presents the business case for switching to Linux thin clients in his Albany-NY based cardiology practice.
  • Bruce Perens and John Terpstra will be on hand to sign copies of the newly-published Official Samba 3 Manual, and five other books in Bruce Perens' Open Source Series from Prentice Hall.
