ELC and OSCON seek conference submissions
Dec 15, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsThe Linux Foundation's CE Linux Forum (CELF) workgroup announced a call for participation (CFP) for this year's Embedded Linux Conference (ELC), to be held Feb. 15-17, 2012, in Redwood Shores, California, with submissions due Jan. 6. O'Reilly Media, meanwhile, issued its own CFP, due Jan. 12, for its Open Source Convention (OSCON) 2012, scheduled for July 16-20, 2012 in Portland, Oregon.
This year's Embedded Linux Conference conference (pictured) was held in April in San Francisco, but ELC 2012 has been moved to Feb. 15-17, 2012, in Redwood Shores, California — south of San Francisco, at the Hotel Softel SF Bay. Unlike last April's event, which featured a co-located Linux Collaboration Summit and Android Builders Summit, there appear to be no package deals this time around.
As usual, there will be plenty to talk about in the embedded Linux world — from the continuing effect of Android on the wider embedded Linux ecosystem, to the condition of the ARM codebase, to the potential (or not) for WebOS to go it alone as an open source mobile operating system. Most ELC presentations, however, deal with the down and dirty technical details common to any embedded Linux platform, such as power management, boot-time, flash memory, and security.
The call for participation submissions are due Jan. 6. CELF is seeking presentations on just about any embedded Linux topic, but suggest the following:
- audio, video, and graphics systems for embedded products
- security
- system size
- bootup time
- meeting real-time constraints
- power management
- streaming media
- flash memory devices and filesystems
- build systems
- embedded distributions
- development tools for embedded users
- technologies related to cell phones, digital set-top boxes, televisions, cameras, handheld devices, or other CE products
- use of Linux in actual products, practical experience, and war stories
- standards for CE products
OSCON issues CFP
Although next year's 14th annual Open Source Convention (OSCON) show is scheduled for July 16-20, 2012 in Portland, Oregon, O'Reilly wants presentation submissions in by Jan 12. The organizer's CFP asks for ideas for conference sessions or tutorials related to open source.
Current topics of particular interest for OSCON 2012 are said to include:
- The startup stack — open source infrastructure that entrepreneurs choose to power their startups
- Code quality — how to write code that works when "agile" would create bigger problems than it solves
- Open source and user experience — moving from strange bedfellows to soulmates
- Open web, open standards, open data — open, open, open!
- Best practices for building a business around open source
- Leadership in the changing open source culture
- Emerging languages — Have a good story about why we need yet another language?
- Open source in mobile devices
- Geek lifestyle — hacking, quantified self, inbox zero, maker culture
- Data and Java — OSCON Data and OSCON Java are being brought back into the fold as part of the main OSCON event in 2012.
