Vyatta announced that its Debian Linux-based x86 routing distribution can scale to environments running at 10Gbps. Vyatta says that PCs running the software can replace 10Gbps-capable systems from proprietary vendors, while costing “a small fraction” of what some vendors charge for 10Gbps add-in cards alone.

Vyatta says the newest “VC4” release of its x86 router distro was benchmarked at 10Gbps speeds using an IBM X3550 server and a Neterion Xframe E 10-gigabit Ethernet card (pictured above). Released a few weeks ago, the Vyatta Community 4 (VC4) release was positioned as offering a more Linux-like command-line user interface, along with greater scalability thanks to routing protocol implementations from the Quagga project.

Stated Leonid Grossman, VP of software engineering at Neterion, which has now joined the Vyatta Ready partner program, “Vyatta is bringing breakthrough scalability and performance to open solutions.”
