French mini-tablet runs Android

May 21, 2010 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

The French firm EviGroup says it is now shipping an Android-based tablet with a five-inch touchscreen. Running on a ARM11-based 667MHz Samsung S3C6410, the $250 “Evi Wallet” offers 256MB RAM, 1GB flash, a microSD slot, and 802.11n WiFi, says the company.

Nancy, France-based EviGroup announced plans to introduce the Evi Wallet last fall shortly before it released its Windows 7-based "Pad" tablet. (The Pad — no relation to Apple's new baby — is a 10.6-inch tablet running on an Intel Atom and offering EviGroup's "Seline" natural language interface software.)

With its five-inch display, the Wallet would have likely been called a mobile Internet device (MID) only a year ago, but in these more enlightened times it is just as likely to be referred to as a small tablet. Instead of running Windows on an Atom, the Wallet uses the well-aged Android 1.5 running on an ARM11-based Samsung S3C6410 system-on-chip (SoC) clocked at up to 667MHz.

Equipped with 256MB RAM, 1GB flash, and a microSD slot, the Wallet offers both Ethernet and 802.11n for communicating with the outside world, says EviGroup. The 5-inch touchscreen provides 800 x 480 resolution, and uses resistive technology, as opposed to the generally superior capacitive alternative.

Offering a speaker, microphone, and a headphone jack, complete with headphone, the device measures 5.2 x 3.4 x 0.55 inches, says EviGroup. A Mini-USB port is also said to be available. The 2000mAh battery, meanwhile, is claimed to offer up to six hours of use.
