Oak Trail tablet will boot Windows, Android, or MeeGo, reports say

Aug 1, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Chinese firm E-King announced an Intel Atom Z670-based tablet that will reportedly be offered with Windows 7, Android, or MeeGo operating systems. The “Talent T9” is said to include a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, a 32GB solid state disk (SSD), a mini-HDMI port, plus a 3G cellular.

As far as we can see, E-King itself offers only a Talent T9 announcement page that's mostly bereft of information, but credible specifications have been provided by Zol and elaborated on by Steve ("Chippy") Paine of UMPC Portal. The device is similar to other consumer tablets employing Intel's Atom Z670 ("Oak Trail") processor, but will run either Windows 7 or Android 3.0, according to E-King — and Chippy adds MeeGo to that list.

According to the UMPC Portal/Zol specs, the Talent T9 has a capacitive touchscreen, like most other consumer tablets, but its 9.7-inch work area packs 1024 x 768 pixels instead of the 1024 x 600 some settle for. Storage and random access memory are typical, with a 32GB SDD and 2GB of RAM, and there's also a microSD slot.

Information cited by Chippy suggests the Talent T9 will be one of the smallest and lightest Atom-powered tablets to reach the market. Weight is cited as 1.4 pounds, while the tablet will supposedly be just 0.43 inches thick.

A price to be paid for this svelteness could be battery life, Chippy noting that "with a 13.7Wh battery, this won't last for much longer than three hours." But, he adds, "standby figures with screen and Wi-Fi off should be impressive, … and even better with MeeGo and Android."

It's said the Talent T9 will include a USB 2.0 port, a mini-HDMI port, a headphone jack, and dual cameras (three megapixel at the rear, VGA-resolution at the front). Wireless, meanwhile, apparently includes 802.11a/b/g/n as standard, plus available Bluetooth 3.0 and an optional 3G modem for the China Unicom network.

UMPC Portal and Zol also mention assisted GPS capabilities, though we're left wondering if the Talent T9 will have an GPS receiver, or merely relies on approximation via Wi-Fi and cellular towers. The tablet is additionally said to include the expected accelerometer, plus a three-axis electronic compass.
