Linux-based IP (Internet protocol) set-top box (STB) vendor Araneo will be acquired by Technoprises, a “global provider of end-to-end cross-media integration,” for $2 million. Araneo sells internal and external IP-STBs to telephone operators and television manufacturers.

Araneo products include an external IP TV Platform based on an IBM PowerPC405 core in conjunction with IBM's STB03xxx and STB04xxx controllers. The Platform uses hardware to decode compressed media streams, with lip synchronization, that are delivered via a fast Ethernet connection. Additional features include PVR (personal video recorder) functions, Web browsing and email, and a full Java virtual machine.

Araneo first demonstrated the Platform in May of 2002. Later that year, it announced a development partnership with embedded Linux specialist MontaVista.

Araneo also offers an internal IP-STB called the TV/IP Module. The Module targets television manufacturers wishing to integrate LAN, DSL modem, and cable modem connectivity in new television designs.
