High availability Linux solution targets telecom/’net apps

Pittsburgh, PA — (press release excerpt) — TimeSys Corp. and GoAhead Software today announced a software solution enabling advanced reliability for complex telecom and Internet systems. As part of this agreement, TimeSys will also be joining the GoAhead Integration Alliance (GIA), becoming part of a network of companies banding together to develop new levels of service availability for Internet… infrastructure products.

Optimizing GoAhead's cross-platform service availability software with Linux to work with the TimeSys Linux/RT operating system allows TimeSys to offer telecom and data networking architects the ability to achieve new levels of availability and predictability within complex systems as well as reduce the implementation cycle. Adding the advanced reliability features to the TimeSys Linux/RT system will provide telecommunications architects with a mechanism to enhance redundant main controllers with established CPU and network reservations. As a result, provisioning commands, queries, and alarm conditions can be handled within predictable deadlines and the main controller complex will be configured to autonomously detect and adapt to internal faults continuously — maintaining predictable response service availability.

The TimeSys Linux/RT operating system is a Linux loadable kernel module with enhancements to meet embedded real-time quality of service (QoS) requirements. Unlike other solutions that provide a small real-time executive beneath Linux, the TimeSys Linux/RT operating system incorporates real-time technology into core Linux. The advantage of this approach is that standard, legacy and new Linux applications and device drivers gain real-time responsiveness and quality of service enhancements. The TimeSys Linux/RT operating system is unique in providing CPU and network reservations, priority inheritance, a high-resolution timer, 256 priority levels, a preemptible kernel, symmetric multi-processor support and os-controlled periodic thread support. The addition of GoAhead's software allows TimeSys to further enhance the TimeSys Linux/RT operating system with advanced reliability features such as fault detection and recovery, switchover and remote upgrading.

The GoAhead SelfReliant product line takes high availability to the next level-service availability. SelfReliant 7000 is a comprehensive, off-the-shelf, cross-platform management software solution. It manages all system resources, hardware and software in real-time to enable manufacturers to provide highly reliable Internet infrastructure equipment.

As part of the GIA, TimeSys will work with participating members towards system solutions that integrate SelfReliant with their technology, enhancing product lines and achieving new levels of product reliability.
