High-availability wrapper site solicits proposals
Oct 31, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsOpenClovis is accepting project proposals for a community website to launch early next year. The “ClovisForge” site aims to help developers quickly add high-availability characteristics to commercial or open-source applications, so that they can be considered for use in telecommunications and other markets requiring “six nines” availability (99.9999 percent uptime).
The ClovisForge site will host projects to build application wrappers called “execution objects” (EOs). EOs enable applications to integrate with OpenClovis's Application Service Platform (ASP) middleware. OpenClovis says that “EOnized” applications running under ASP can be monitored and restarted, or migrated to different systems in case of hardware failure or any other errors or alarms.
Applications likely to have EO projects hosted at ClovisForge include MySQL, solidDB for MySQL, Vovida VoIP, Vyatta OFR, XORP, Apache, Asterisk, Yate, network management applications such as OpenNMS, and “various Java and Linux-based application-ready execution environments,” OpenClovis says. The company hopes ClovisForge will help developers add high-availability characterists quickly, allowing their software to be considered for use in telecom and other applications demanding high availability.
CEO V. K. Budhraja stated, “With the convergence of IT and telecommunications infrastructures, it will be beneficial for open source telephony and enterprise applications to achieve the 'six nines' reliability that is essential for the telecommunications market, by integrating with OpenClovis.”
Paola Lubet, VP of marketing at Solid Information Technology, stated, “Our own survey of IT professionals earlier this year demonstrated enterprise demand for open source solutions that ensure mission critical applications have uninterrupted, real-time access to information. We share with [OpenClovis] the commitment to drive 'six nines' availability to both the communications industry, and the broader enterprise application market.”
OpenClovis announced ClovisForge earlier this month, through an exclusive interview with LinuxDevices.com. The company released ASP under the GPL in August — a donation to the community of more than half a million lines of code, it said at the time.
Availability
OpenClovis says it is accepting project applications now, with project selection set for January of next year. The ClovisForge website will launch shortly thereafter, it says.
