Hypervisor demoed on single-core phone chipset

Trango will demonstrate its hypervisor virtualization technology running on a single-core ARM mobile phone chipset from NXP, next week at the CTIA Wireless Association show in Orlando, Fla. The two companies will also team up on a demo at the Embedded Systems Conferences in San Jose, Calif. the following week.

Trango's hypervisor technology supports MIPS, ARM, and PowerPC architectures, and targets secure set-top boxes, mobile phones, nework equipment, and certified systems. The hypervisor comprises a 20KB microkernel said to allow two or more guest operating systems to run in CPU user mode on a single core.

Trango said its CTIA and ESC demo will showcase:

  • Support for NTT DoCoMo's OSTI (Open and Secure Terminal Initiative) architecture specification, aimed at using virtualization to separate Operator and Enterprise application domains
  • Meeting OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform) security requirements with “Trusted Execution Environments”
  • Trango's “full SDK, including Eclipse plug-in”
  • The ability to support low-end to high-end mobile platforms

Trango claims its hypervisor can reduce bill-of-material and validation costs, and secure critical functions to help build robust, reliable devices. The technology can also help device designers integrate market standards and isolate proprietary code from GPL license constraints, according to the vendor.

Trango previously demonstrated its hypervisor at the ARM Developer's Conference last October.
