IDE and embedded Linux support new Mot PowerQUICC PPC SOCs
Mar 24, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsMetrowerks announced an integrated development environment (IDE) for embedded system and device designs using Motorola's PowerQUICC III system-on-chip processors based on PowerPC e500 processor cores. The IDE includes support for embedded Linux based operation of the target devices.
The IDE, known as “CodeWarrior Development Studio, PowerQUICC III Edition,” is offered in three versions, according to Metrowerks. Each “studio” includes the Metrowerks CodeWarrior IDE, latest compiler and debugger, PowerTAP PRO in-circuit-emulator, evaluation boards, operating systems, protocol stacks, and application code. An e500 instruction set simulator is also included, enabling software development and test prior to availability of the actual silicon. Both embedded Linux and OSE target operating systems are supported.
Motorola describes the MPC8560 as being ideal for “integrated control and forwarding plane processing in multi-service access platforms, central office switching and transmission, wireless infrastructure, gigabit and terabit routers, voice gateway products, IP Virtual Private Networks and optical networking equipment.” The MPC8540, on the other hand, is said to be useful as a “control element for network routers and switches, storage subsystems, network appliances, and print and imaging devices.”
