Jaluna SA today announced the availability of a family of three Linux-based operating systems aimed at builders of telecom and network infrastructure equipment. The three products include: Jaluna-2/EL, an embedded Linux OS; Jaluna-2/RT, a real-time OS based on a combination of Linux plus a microkernel; Jaluna-2/VL, a real-time multi-OS software platform based on the combination of several instances of… Linux along with a microkernel.

Jaluna announced the release of a preview version of Jaluna-2 last February.

“Being able to run efficiently several Linux instances on the same hardware brings exciting scalability and availability opportunities for new generations networking equipment,” commented Nokia Networks director of technology Timo Jokiaho. “The innovative system software platforms based on COTS components delivered by Jaluna open up new perspectives to deliver competitive solutions to our customers.”

According to Jaluna, the OSes use Linux kernel 2.4.20 and support PowerPC (including PowerQUICC) and IA-32 (i.e. x86) processors.

Jaluna said it offers the Jaluna-2 family OSes on a subscription basis, and does not charge royalties for installation on multiple target systems. Subscribers receive technical support, “comprehensive documentation,” and an integrated cross-development environment, the company said.
