Java kit supports Linux, real-time

Apogee Software is shipping a collection of tools and runtime environments aimed at helping Java programmers target embedded architectures and RTOSes. The Aphelion collection includes JREs (Java runtime environment) and JDEs (Java development environments) for Linux and other OSes.

According to Apogee, applications targeted by Aphelion include wireless communication devices, electronic consumer appliances, industrial controllers and monitors, factory floor automation devices, client devices used in enterprise management systems, RFID devices, point-of-sale terminals, and telematics and infotainment devices.

Aphelion is based on IBM's Java-powered WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment product (WEME), extended by Apogee for compliance with version 1.0.1(b) of the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ). Aphelion JREs also comply with a variety of J2ME JSRs.

Embedded OSes targeted by the company's JDEs include “any embedded Linux,” several popular RTOSes (VxWorks, LynxOS, Integrity), and Windows CE.

CEO George Malek stated, “Apogee is the first and, thus far, the only provider of Java runtime environments offering JREs that are fully compliant with the latest RTSJ specification and the J2ME Platform. This should be welcome news to developers of real-time software systems who want to switch from ADA or C/C++ to Java.”

Steve Gruber, program director of embedded software at IBM, stated, “RTSJ opens the door for whole new classes of applications to enjoy the productivity gains of the Java development platform.”
