Tokyo-based Aplix Corp. announced a version of its Java Language Based Environment (JLBE) for the LiMo Platform. JBlend for LiMo enables developers to use existing developer toolkits and IDEs, such as Eclipse, to develop and deploy Java Micro Edition (ME) applications on LiMo (Linux Mobile) Platform phones, says the company.

The widely deployed JBlend middleware is said to enable secure execution of Java applications within digital devices. With JBlend for LiMo, Java-ME developers can now easily port their Java applications to LiMo devices, says the company.

JBlend for LiMo is fully compliant to the Java Community Process specifications, says Aplix. The JLBE is said to support the following technologies:

• CLDC
• MIDP 2
• WMA
• MMAPI
• JTWI
• JSR 75 FC

Aplix has long provided reference implementations of its Java stack for MOAP(L), the Linux phone stack used for many years by NEC, Panasonic, and Esteemo, in phones distributed by Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo. Aplix is also an equity investor in MontaVista, whose Linux kernel distribution underlies MOAP(L), and which supplies development kits and testing tools optimized for Aplix's middleware framework.

MOAP(L) is the product of open source collaboration between NEC and Panasonic dating back to 2003. MOAP(L)'s middleware layer is being phased out, however, in favor of components developed by a larger open source collaboration — LiMo. LiMo's “Core” membership includes several Java stack providers, including Aplix and rival Access, which was contracted by NTT DoCoMo to port operator-specific feature packs to LiMo.

Another potential supplier of Java to LiMo members is Esmertec, which is merging with LiMo member (by way of LiPs) Purple Labs. The two companies expect to reemerge soon as the Myriad Group.

Unlike Access, Aplix is also part of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) supporting the Linux/Java Google Android platform.

Availability

A version of JBlend for LiMo appears to be available now, and according to Aplix, it will offer “support for full JME MSA stacks” in the third quarter. Aplix says it plans to offers other Java-based JBlend products for LiMo in the future.
