Lanner announced a Linux-ready network appliance that sports up to 8GB of RAM and seven Ethernet ports. Featuring LAN bypass on two of its ports, the FW-7580 supports a variety of Intel CPUs, has a 40-character front panel display, and offers both hard disk and CompactFlash storage, the company says.

Lanner recently announced a compact "desktop" network appliance based on an Intel Atom processor, the FW-7530. The new FW-7580 shows what can be accomplished with a larger 1U form factor, and with a chipset that supports a variety of CPUs.

The chipset in question is Intel's G41 northbridge and ICH7R southbridge, offering a maximum clock speed of 3.0GHz and frontside bus speeds of 800MHz, 1066MHz, or 1333MHz, according to the company. Lanner says the device can support a variety of CPUs using Intel's LGA775 socket, including Core 2 Duo, Pentium D, and Celeron processors.

According to Lanner, a pair of 240-pin DIMM sockets on the FW-7580 supports up to 8GB of DDR2 memory. Mass storage, meanwhile, can be provided by either a SATA-interfaced, 2.5-inch hard disk drive or by a Type II CompactFlash slot, the company notes.

The FW-7580 has seven Ethernet ports, six of them capable of gigabit speeds via Intel 82547L controllers, and one 10/100 port using Intel's 82562DM controller, Lanner says. The company adds that two ports support LAN bypass functionality, in case of system failure.

The device's front panel, pictured above, also sports two USB 2.0 ports and another RJ45 connector that is intended for connection of a serial console. The system provides a 20 x 2 character display, suitable for displaying system status messages, Lanner adds.

Unlike some network appliances, the FW-7580 lacks a VGA port. However, it includes a PCI Express x8 expansion slot, according to the company. Operating system support is said to encompass Linux, Windows, OpenBSD, and FreeBSD.
