Automation PC has ten isolated serial ports
Nov 5, 2010 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsLanner announced a 1U serial communications platform designed for SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), especially in environments prone to electrical surges. The LEC-3100 includes Intel's Atom N270 processor, 10 isolated serial ports, five gigabit Ethernet ports, eight digital I/Os, four USB 2.0 ports, a PCI-104 expansion slot, and a DVI-D video output, according to the company.
Lanner says that, like the LEC-3000 introduced in May, its LEC-3100 is designed as a serial communications platform for environments prone to electrostatic discharges, such as power substations, factory control rooms, or telco racks. The 1U appliance has ten isolated serial ports, eight of which use screw-based Phoenix contacts and two of which use DB8 connectors, the company adds.

According to Lanner, all the serial ports (visible above) are monitored by corresponding LEDs on the LEC-3100's front panel, and all can use RS232, RS422, or RS485 control signals. The device is additionally said to include five gigabit Ethernet ports with RJ45 connectors.
The LEC-3100 further offers four USB 2.0 ports (one on the front panel, two on the rear, and one internally via a header). In addition, there is a DVI-D video output (with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels) and audio I/O (line in, line out, and mic in), Lanner adds.
The LEC-3100 has been built around Intel's Atom N270 processor, with the evergreen 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge, and — like the multitude of other devices using these components — accepts a maximum 2GB of DDR2 RAM. Persistent storage is provided by an available 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive, or by a Type I/II CompactFlash slot, according to Lanner.
Lanner says it has provided the device with a watchdog timer and a Winbond W83627 integrated hardware monitor. Meanwhile, instead of the expected Mini PCI Expansion slot, the LEC-3100 is said to offer a PCI-104 slot as well as eight digital I/Os (four in, four out).
According to Lanner, the LEC-3100 runs fanlessly in temperatures ranging from 14 to 131 deg. F. The system runs Linux 2.4.16 or above, as well as Windows XP and Windows XP Embedded.
