Latest HyperSCSI release adds Windows client driver
May 7, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 3 viewsThe Data Storage Institute of Singapore has released the latest version of the open source (GPL) HyperSCSI network storage protocol client and server. The new version adds a Windows 2000 client driver which, although still considered to be under development, can be downloaded for evaluation purposes. The new version of HyperSCSI (release 20030506) can be downloaded from the HyperSCSI website.
The following brief introduction to HyperSCSI was provided by HyperSCSI project . . .
HyperSCSI is a network storage protocol designed for the transfer of SCSI data and commands over networks that runs on Ethernet-based networks, but does not use TCP/IP as a foundation for communications. While this may run counter to convention, it has allowed HyperSCSI to achieve high throughput without the need for complex and expensive hardware add-ons. Intrinsic advantages of bypassing TCP/IP include immunity to cracking via the Internet, simplicity, and plug-and-play functions. It supports IDE and SCSI hard disk drives, optical, tape, and even removable USB drives. It is compatible with Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet (with and without Jumbo frames), LANE over ATM, and 802.11b wireless LANs.
