Leading Linux phone partners form “Adcore-Tech”

Jul 31, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

The mobile phone joint venture formed by NEC and Matsushita/Panasonic reportedly will include Texas Instruments (TI), and will be known as “Adcore-Tech Co. Ltd.” TI will have a 12 percent share, and the venture will be capitalized at $103.8M, about 17 percent more than reported earlier, EE Times-Asia is reporting.

When rumors of the deal first surfaced through a Reuters story on July 25th, TI was listed as a partner. However, a subsequent NEC press release did not mention the U.S. chipmaker, which leads the global mobile phone chipset market.

All sources agree the venture will focus on handset technology for 3G and 3.5G networks, with products likely to become available in late 2007. Adcore-Tech handsets will almost certainly run Linux, given that NEC and Panasonic are among the top makers of Linux-based mobile handsets, and recently joined a Linux mobile phone industry group devoted to Linux collaboration.

A few more details can be found in the EE Times-Asia story, here.
