LINDON, UTAH — (company press release) — Lineo, Inc., a leading developer of embedded Linux system software, today announced that United System Engineers (USE), based in Shiojiri, Nagano, Japan has agreed to be acquired by Lineo. USE is a custom systems engineering company with 15 years of experience in embedded system engineering for some of the largest technology vendors in the worldwide embedded… system market. USE specializes in embedded printing, networking and support for multiple chip architectures.

USE has a long history of custom systems engineering on a wide variety of hardware platforms including MIPs, Hitachi, SPARC, Motorola and Intel. This acquisition by Lineo expands the ability to run Lineo Embedix Linux, the premier Embedded Linux operating system, on these platforms, providing OEMs with expanded hardware platform options. In addition to USE's specialty in embedded Linux development, USE has an extensive background in a number of other operating systems, including UNIX, OS-9, NeXTStep, DOS, and Windows.

“The addition of USE brings a wealth of embedded Linux engineering expertise in the most popular hardware platforms” said Bryan Sparks, CEO of Lineo, Inc. “With the new office in Japan, we can better service OEMs in the Pacific Rim, a highly-concentrated OEM region.”

Yoshinobu Ushiyama, CEO of USE said, “Embedded Linux is quickly becoming the operating system of choice for OEMs. The merger of these two companies will provide vendors the hardware and software platform choices and flexibility they desire.”

USE is the third company that Lineo is purchasing. In February, Lineo announced their intent to acquire Zentropix and Rt-Control, providing the Lineo Embedix product family with hard real-time solutions and the ability to embed Linux in small microcontrollers.

USE, based in Shiojiri, Nagano, Japan has 27 employees. This office will remain in place and augment the existing Lineo professional services organization by supporting and enhancing custom engineering work. With the addition of the office in Shiojiri, Japan, Lineo now has sales, services and engineering offices in Utah, Washington, Virginia, Toronto, Taiwan, the UK, and Japan.
