Lineo adds MIPS-32 ISA processor support to Embedix OS

Oct 31, 2000 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Linden, UT — (press release excerpt) — Lineo has announced Embedix (Embedded Linux) support for IDT's RC32334 32-bit MIPS-32 based integrated processor. The RC32334 includes built-in interrupt, DMA, timing, and memory controllers, plus a dual-channel UART and a built-in PCI bus bridge. The new Embedix support, a joint development effort of both Lineo and IDT, provides a validated Linux kernel on the RC32334 in conjunction with drivers for PCI-based communications peripherals that interface to the RC32334 via its on-chip PCI bus interface. The RC32334/Embedix combo is being targeted at cost-sensitive embedded applications in communications and consumer markets including home gateways, SOHO routers, and Internet appliances.

The IDT RC32334 includes the following on-chip functions:

  • 150 MHz MIPS-32 (32-bit) CPU core
  • SDRAM, Flash, ROM, SRAM memory interface
  • DMA, interrupt, and system timing controllers
  • Local bus and local I/O interfaces
  • Built-in 66MHz 32-bit PCI bus bridge
  • Dual-channel 16550 compatible UART
  • SPI interface for interface to EEPROM, A-to-D, etc.
Further information on the RC32334 processor is available online, here.

RC32334 Embedix support is available from IDT as part of the device's evaluation kit, as well as directly from Lineo. Additionally, support for MIPS-based CPUs (including the RC32334) will be incorporated into the next release of Lineo's Embedix SDK (software development kit) early next year.
