Lineo to support NetSilicon’s ARM SOC
Sep 5, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsWaltham, MA — (press release excerpt) — Embedded Linux vendor Lineo Inc. and system-on-chip maker NetSilicon Inc. today announced a partnership to support Lineo's uClinux operating system on NetSilicon's NET+ARM networked system-on-chip processors. The first NetSilicon product to result from the new partnership, being called NET+uClinux, is part of an ongoing product development program designed to provide integrated solutions and advanced performance for the growing intelligent device market. uClinux is a distribution of embedded Linux for devices requiring an extremely small software footprint and that do not require a memory management unit.
NetSilicon's NET+uClinux development system integrates embedded Linux, certified networking applications, and an Ethernet-ready system-on-chip into a single, production-ready product. The company already has more than 60 customers using an earlier uClinux-based integrated platform in applications such as Rymic Systems' RymicNET, a networked vehicle diagnostics device deployed by the U.S. Army for battle tanks, and Wireless Networks' BlueLAN Bluetooth access point, which allows mobile computer users to connect to the Internet via the wireless Bluetooth protocol.
The Lineo/NetSilicon partnership provides a product migration plan for all of NetSilicon's existing OEM customers who have been developing with uClinux. NetSilicon's existing customers will be given the opportunity to upgrade to NET+uClinux and participate in Lineo's standard support program.
NET+uClinux will be released in Q4 2001. This open source device networking platform will offer OEMs of intelligent, networked devices a significantly advanced version of uClinux running on the NET+ARM chip and will offer OEM design engineers improved memory usage, reliability, and functionality.
