Linux development kit speeds ColdFire based projects

SAN JOSE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Moreton Bay has released its new eLIA development platform. eLIA is an embedded Linux platform for developing custom Internet appliances based on the ColdFire processor.

In the highly competitive design engineering world, time to market is key, and the eLIA platform has been designed to provide an extensible platform enabling designers to fast track implementation and evaluation of their designs.

eLIA has built in hardware and software features, so design engineers don't waste valuable time with unnecessary customization or redesign. The card includes an array of standard I/O buses and communications ports (Ethernet, serial, IDE, PCI and USB) as well as a general purpose expansion interfaces. Memory is configurable with 16 MB to 32MB SDRAM and on to four MB FLASH.

eLIA is more than just a basic hardware development environment. Linux is supplied as the embedded operating system, so with the kit you are supplied the source code to embedded Linux kernel and to the suite of device drivers, applications and tools. These applications include routers, firewalls, VPN server, packet filtering, IP masquerading, dial-on-demand and dial-in.

The engineers at Moreton Bay did the original port of Linux to the ColdFire processor and they made it freely available under the GNU Open Source license. They believe that with an embedded Linux kernel and a powerful yet cost effective processor like the 70 MIP ColdFire, design engineers now have the tools to develop sophisticated custom appliances quickly.

eLIA is also a customizable Linux thin server, so custom applications can be developed to be stored in flash memory and executed by the ColdFire processor. This code could be special encryption or authentication protocols, or some local monitoring script where the eLIA design is to be used as a remote control device.

The eLIA Development Kit package including the eLIA board, documentation and software is available from Moreton Bay for $495
