Linux fast-boot add-on reviewed
Jan 6, 2009 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsPC BIOS giant Phoenix Technologies today launched a fast-booting Linux add-on aimed at PC makers and individual end users. This hands-on review finds “HyperSpace” works to redress slow boot times, WiFi connection hassles, and short battery life, at the cost of hardware and software flexibility.
For instance, HyperSpace's Linux environment offers very limited hardware support (for things like USB mice). And, users cannot install their own browser plugins (though Firefox extensions can be installed).
On the positive side, HyperSpace wins praise for its suspend/resume capabilities, WiFi connection prowess, and ability to hand network connection info between the two OSes. Additionally, the virtualization-enabled “Hybrid” version of HyperSpace gains appeal by being able to boot Windows in the background, while the user browses in Linux. Thereafter, the user can toggle between the two OSes.
A review at our sister site, DesktopLinux, looks at OEM HyperSpace installations on two Lenovo PCs, including a high-end R400 notebook and an S10 netbook. However, HyperSpace is also available for download and installation by individual users.
