MIDs gain wireless connection management app

Jun 5, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Belgian wireless firm Option has ported its network connection management utility to Linux, with the aim of targeting mobile Internet devices (MIDs). GlobeTrotter Connect for Linux aims to help users of Atom-based MIDs running Moblin Linux manage their 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi, and eventually, WiMAX… connectivity, says Option.

GlobeTrotter Connect for Linux aims to help users “seamlessly” manage their access to the proliferation of networks supported on modern devices, the company says. The company previously offered similar utilities for popular desktop operating systems from Microsoft and Apple. But, states the company, “Linux is the operating system of choice for MIDs because of its small footprint, fast responsiveness, ease of customization, and low cost.”

Touted features include:

  • Monitoring and option customization for wireless sessions
  • Simple UI
  • Multi-language support
  • Supports 2G or 3G cellular data networks
  • Can automatically supply user credentials
  • “Automatically sets profile” from the SIM

Stated Pankaj Kedia, Director of Global Ecosystem Programs in Intel's Ultra Mobility Group, “[We] make it easier for our customers to seamlessly switch across wireless technologies.”
